Most IRS notices aren't audits — they're routine. Here's how to read the letter, what not to do, and when to call your CPA.
A letter from the IRS makes everyone's stomach drop, but the vast majority are simple notices — a math correction, a request for a form, or a balance reminder. Read the notice number in the top corner and don't panic.
Three rules
- Don't ignore it — there's always a response deadline
- Don't pay or sign anything until you understand it
- Forward it to your CPA before you respond
If you're a Northstar client, audit support is built in — send us the letter and we'll handle the back-and-forth on your behalf.
