Your new puppy's first week: a calm, simple checklist
6 min read · From the Cedarbrook team
Those first seven days set the tone for years. Here's how to handle vaccines, sleep, crate time, and that very first vet visit without overwhelm.
Bringing home a puppy is equal parts joy and chaos. The good news: you don't need to do everything at once. The first week is about safety, gentle routine, and a little structure — not perfection.
Day one is for settling in. Keep the world small: one quiet room, a cozy bed, and lots of low-key time together. Resist the urge to invite the whole neighborhood over. A tired, overstimulated puppy struggles to feel safe.
Book your first wellness visit within the first few days. We'll confirm your puppy's vaccine schedule, check for parasites, talk food and feeding amounts, and — just as importantly — make the clinic a happy place full of treats so future visits stay easy.
Start crate and potty routines early and keep them boring and consistent. Puppies thrive on predictability: out to potty after waking, eating, and playing, then praise like they just won an award. Accidents are normal — clean calmly and move on.
Above all, protect sleep. Puppies need 18–20 hours a day. A well-rested puppy learns faster, bites less, and grows into the dog you're dreaming of.
